Air Purifier Ionizer

Questions

Question #1: I have a holmes air purifier Hap-U242 with an ionizer.?

I didn't know what an ionizer did all the time so I constantly used it. I now found out that it creates Ozone, and I wheeze and cough all the time is it possible that my purifier damaged my lungs. I used the purifier for over a year.

Question #2: I need to get rid of a tobacco smoke odor in my apartment. Air ionizers/purifiers don't work. Help!?

I've tried everything. Changing the air filters, air purifiers/ionizers (the expensive kind). I don't know if the odor is coming from my next door neighbor or from the previous tenant who was a smoker. It seems to get worse when the heat is on. My landlord insists it can't be coming through the vents from my neighbors. My next move is to call an HVAC company, which will probably be expensive. Please help!
It's not a constant odor except for in the kitchen. The rest of the house it seems to come and go. I'd get an ozone machine but it doesn't seem like a solution if it's the neighbors smoke that is coming through my vents.

Question #3: Dry Wall Dust, Can't live in my apartment. Help Needed?

I hope my onslaught of questions doesn't offend anyone, just going through some rough times and need any advice or ideas I can get.

Recently moved to an apartment that turned out to have a strange chemical odor and made us sick, me particularly, had to be rushed same day to emerge for breathing issues.

So we vacated the premessis, paid a second $800 for movers to move us to another new place. This is where things get hopelessly complicated.

This 3rd place is a new construction of December 1st 2011. Walked in there, washed all surfaces and floors with damp stuff to get rid of the dust, there is a strong smell when u walk in there, of construction materials. I figured it was Dry Wall Dust and since my lungs are a mess from the 2nd place, this is a huge disaster.

I get like some breathing issues, throat irritation and this pasty taste in my mouth and powder sensation on my skin especially the hands. Here is what I tried so far, not sure why it failed.

1. Cleaned all surfaces with water
2. Used $100 ionizer, $350 Hepa Air Purifier, $600 Ionizer that does 820 SqFt (my place is 1200) ran them all for like 5 hours.
3. I aired out the place with all doors windows open for 2 hours (its -20C over here right now...)

Still, the problem remains, I have spent $1000+ in hotel and I need to eventually get into a home otherwise ill wound up on the street because of health issues...

If anyone has any help or advice to provide me to fix Drywall Dust in the air, I would be eternally grateful.

PS: to make matters worst, all boxes and furniture and fabric items have soaked up the weird chemical smell from the 2nd apartment and is now mingling with the dry wall smells.

Question #4: I read that air purifiers with ionizers create ozone and are bad...?

I was looking at the more expensive air filters like the Paralda Air Purifier by Alen and the BlueAir 203 Air Purifier and I noticed that it includes an ionizer...wtf? It also goes on to say that
electrostatic ionizer releases negative charges that make airborne particles cling more easily to the filter media and help increase overall cleaning efficiency. No ozone by-products are generated. I don't know what to think of this... I was trying to avoid the whole ionizing thing completely...

Question #5: How can I tell if the ionizer on my air filter creates ozone?

I know not all ionizer air filters create ozone, and I have pets that I can't have near ozone. Other ions are fine. I just haven't been using the "Performance booster" for fear it creates ozone. I have Holmes HAP412N-U HEPA-Type Mini Tower Air Purifier.

Thanks!

Question #6: ionising /air purifier?

I have a grandaughter who is allergic to dust mites and cat and dog dander ,these affect her exzema , does anybody know if Ionisers/ air purifiers work ,and if they would help my grandaughter as I was thinking of buying one ,also any particular models that people would reccomend ? Would be gratful for any input .Iam in the UK so british products please .

Question #7: Are Hepa-type Air purifiers safe to use around Cats?

I know it's a stupid question since they are primarly used for pet dander.

But there is a caution thing in the manual that I don't understand,

It states,

Caution, the ionizer in this appliance proudces less ozone than the UL* established limits of 50ppb. However, in high concentrations, Ozone can be harmful to birds and small pets. To prevent ozone buildup , we suggest using the ionizer in well ventilated areas with the air purifier fan on.

So is it safe to use in around my cat in a small apt?

Question #8: How do I get rid of ionizer ozone?

I just read that air purifiers with ionizer can create ozone. Which can cause serious health issues like chest pain and other issues. I just turned mine off and don't plan on using it anymore. Does ozone stay in the air even with it off? If so how long? Also will I need to take some other measure to get the ozone out the air?
